The History of Irons Spans Several Centuries

Irons are often associated with thoroughly modern appliances. Some may still remember irons with a “soul” (a piece of metal heated in a fire and placed inside the iron). However, even those were among the later developments in the history of this tool. Irons, or rather devices that served the function of irons, likely appeared in the world even before our era. The ancient Greeks were probably the first to iron, although their irons functioned more like rollers. It was an ingenious method, to be sure, but given the significant differences in use, it’s generally accepted that the Chinese in the 8th century AD were the first to use irons in the true sense. In China, ironing was done with a device shaped like a saucepan, which could be conveniently handled despite the hot coals inside. This extreme method evolved significantly over time, but it wasn’t until the 18th century that irons began to take the shape we recognize today—a flat piece of cast iron with a wire handle, which made it possible to hold. Even then, the shape of the iron was similar to what we use today, but it could only be used as long as the cast iron remained hot. However, humanity quickly adapted. The next step was the “iron with a soul,” where the “soul” was a heated iron bar inserted inside the iron. Since these bars were interchangeable, several could be heated simultaneously, allowing for continuous ironing.

Various ironing methods emerged over the years, but most were rendered obsolete by the late 19th century. It was then that Henry Seeley invented the electric iron. Although it was not yet light or reliable, it marked the first step toward the modern irons we use today. Importantly, his invention allowed for the moistening of fabrics, making it possible to iron different types of garments without damaging them with improper conditions. Thanks to Seeley’s invention, we now have steam irons, travel irons, and even irons for vertical ironing. The advancement of technology has also enabled the use of steam generators, allowing for precise ironing without the need for meticulous movements of the iron’s soleplate. Furthermore, without continued technological improvements, we wouldn’t have access to steam mannequins, ironing tables, or pneumatic presses today.
